The Renault was no longer full to the roof. Ana had obviously gone through their things and taken some: her pack, some food. Rolf tried to open the car door and could not. He struggled to pull the lock up: it was stiff with cold, like his useless hands. Even unlocked, the door would not open. He pushed against it with his shoulder, then wriggled out of his sleeping bag, moved back and gave it a good kick with both feet and tried again to open it. Ice creaked and fell into the snow, and the door gave way. Rolf's breath was fogging over the windshield. He pushed his sleeping bag away and stepped into snow. Stood and fell: his legs were not working. Pulled himself up and leaned against the snow-blanketed metal.

Wo bist du? His question sounded plaintive. Wo bist du? Where are you?
